Always Ready: JTF-CS trains for air and ground mobility

    Joint Task Force Civil Support

FORT EUSTIS, Va. – Joint Task Force Civil Support (JTF-CS), in coordination with the 633rd Air Base Wing and the 437th Airlift Wing, conducted a deployment readiness exercise (DRE) here Aug. 24, 2015.

The DRE gave the participating units the opportunity to improve deployment and processing procedures through air and ground movement.

“This exercise is all about training,” said Michael Collins, deputy to the commander, JTF-CS. “This evolution allows us to walk through the steps and make mistakes, so if we have to do this in a real-world environment, we are ready and able.”

JTF-CS members were divided into convoy teams and required to go through a deployment processing line where all personal data is reviewed prior to deployment.
“We want to ensure and validate each deploying member has the required documents before they leave,” said Air Force Master Sgt. Stephen Hall, joint personnel operations center supervisor, JTF-CS.

Once processed, members belonging to the Early Entry Command Post (EECP) inspected and drove their vehicles to Langley Air Force Base for further inspection from the 633rd ABW.

“The EECP brings the right amount of expertise to start a response process,” said Randy Hall, deputy division chief for training, readiness and exercises, JTF-CS. “ This allows JTF-CS to start the command and control process and brings with it the ability to set up all communications we would need to start that process.”

The 633rd ABW joint inspectors handle all processing and inspection of vehicles and personnel prior to aircraft embarkation.

“The 633rd ABW is the final evaluation point before equipment and personnel are loaded onto military aircraft,” said Randy Hall. “Their entire duty is to make sure everything is prepared and ready to fly.”

After final inspection, the vehicles are lined up and prepared to be loaded into Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, assigned to the 14th Airlift Squadron.

“This particular movement didn’t pose and significant obstacles,” said Randy Hall. “This allowed us to quickly move our vehicles from the inspection station to the aircraft with minimal effort, and in return, complete the deployment process with great ease.”

A short flight was made from Langley to Richmond International Airport, Va. where the vehicles were offloaded and driven back to Fort Eustis.

JTF-CS anticipates plans and integrates U.S. Northern Command CBRN operations. JTF-CS provides command and control for designated DOD specialized response forces to assist local, state, federal and tribal partners in saving lives, preventing further injury, and providing critical support to enable community recovery.
