Story by Airman 1st Class Jeffrey Tatro

    158th Fighter Wing

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Members of the 158th Fighter Wing Security Forces Squadron, Vermont State Police, and the South Burlington Police Department teamed up to execute an Active Shooter drill on the Air Guard Base, Aug. 5.

During the training the Security Forces Squadron received a mock 911 call of an active shooter in a building located on the base. A team of Airmen responded to the call immediately and acted as first responders to the incident. They pushed through the building encountering blank gun shots being fired and mock casualties. They cleared room by room eventually discovering the first of potentially multiple shooters. The team eliminated the first threat by use of deadly force. Continuing their search responders subsequently cornered a second shooter who was immediately challenged and apprehended. Soon after the initial response a team of local law enforcement officers responded as a follow on response force.

“Anyone who has followed the news in the last few months or the last couple of years know that incidents of active shooters are on the rise,” said Master Sgt. Chris Lawrence, security forces supervisor.

On base the Vermont Air National Guard are the first responders to a crisis on base and following a 911 call. Local police would provide aid in any active shooter scenario. The VTANG Fire Department was also involved in the exercise by using the Incident Command System (ICS). The ICS helps multiple agencies integrate procedures, personnel and equipment to effectively manage domestic incidents.

"We just want to ensure we are ahead of the game in terms on how we are going to respond, that the local responding agencies are familiar with our buildings, our layouts, what our policies and procedures are, so that we can work together, "said Lawrence.

The Vermont Air National Guard continually trains to respond for state and national emergencies.

A partnership between the VTANG and local law enforcement will ensure the safety of our Airmen and the surrounding communities.
