GLENDALE, Ariz. – Members of the Arizona National Guard’s Victim Advocate Office, and Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) program attended the 2015 Glendale Domestic Violence Conference, here Aug. 20-21.
The two-day workshop hosted over 100 members of the law enforcement and judicial system and focused on recognizing and preventing domestic violence, sexual harassment and assault behaviors, and the fundamentals of the investigation process.
“The purpose of this training is to understand how different organizations are addressing the issue of domestic violence and sexual assault, and collaborate with the developers of successful initiatives,” said Army Master Sgt. Angelita Manygoats, Arizona National Guard SHARP coordinator. “The Arizona National Guard has a zero tolerance policy that we instill into the culture of our organization. The training our service members receive during their part time service can be used to strengthen the culture of their fulltime employer as well.”
The City of Glendale hosts this annual conference with an aim toward eliminating domestic violence and sexual offenses throughout our community through cultural change, prevention, intervention, investigation, accountability, advocacy and response.
“These issues are not unique to one area or organization,” said Kyle Mickel, special projects coordinator for the Glendale City Courts. “By bringing together the professionals that address these issues at all levels of our system, we unify our efforts to mitigate and eliminate these acts from our communities as a whole.”
As part of this year’s conference the Arizona National Guard was invited to give a presentation on the Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program. The DoD SAPR program is a multidisciplinary approach with initiatives in five lines of effort: prevention, investigation, accountability, advocacy/victim assistance and assessment. This approach was developed to achieve purpose and unity of effort across the entire Department of Defense.
“We are members of the communities in which we serve,” said Army Staff Sgt. Edgar Campbell, Arizona National Guard victim advocate coordinator. “Having the opportunity to present the Arizona National Guard’s approach to prevention and our willingness to assist other organizations, demonstrates our dedication to stop these senseless acts.”
