KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Music filled the auditorium at Park Hill High School as Navy Band Southeast Sailors played a special concert for the students and staff Aug. 18 during Kansas City Navy Week.

“When the message is delivered in this sort of fashion it really allows the students to see the Navy in a different manner than they would think of it otherwise,” said Brad Kincheloe, Park Hill High School principal.

The music moved some of the students, who were bobbing their heads, tapping their feet or even out of their seats dancing during the concert.

“It’s cool, the kids really get into it,” said singer/guitarist, Musician Seaman Jeremy Sauer. “They tend to be the more receptive audience.”

The band musicians also enjoyed their time at Park Hill High School, showcasing their talent for the students.

“It’s fun,” said tuba instrumentalist, Musician 2nd Class Rebecca Jenkins. “I like being able to get out in the community and show them that we’re not only about military and war.”

The Brass Band, “TGIF” played classic songs, such as “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “Voodoo Love” while the Popular Music Band “Pride” played top 40 songs including “See You Again” and “Fun.” The groups played for more than an hour.

“The Navy has always been a great friend to Park Hill,” said Kincheloe. "They’ve always been ready to help us out when they can do something and this is just another example of the great opportunities the Navy has provided for our children. Not just career opportunities when they get out of school, but educational opportunities while they’re in school.”

Park Hill High School also shares a special connection with the Navy. Capt. Keith Hoskins who is the commanding officer of Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, is a 1984 graduate from Park Hill High School.

“The fact that the airshow is back in town, we won’t miss it,” added Kincheloe.

These two band sub-groups along with two other components, the Woodwind Quintet “Fair Winds,” and Brass Quintet “Windward Brass,” make up Navy Band Southeast, from Jacksonville, Florida.

Navy Band Southeast was established in 1995 and is comprised of 35 professional musicians. It’s one of 11 official U.S. Navy Bands.

The band also performed at Children’s Mercy Hospital earlier in the week and is scheduled to play at numerous venues in support of Kansas City Navy Week including performances at the Kansas City Chief’s football game, Kansas City Crown Center and Parkville Days celebration.

The Navy Week program is designed to educate Americans on the importance of naval service and help them understand the investment they make in their Navy.

“It’s a lot of public relations,” added Jenkins. “Coming to Kansas City specifically is cool because there’s not huge Navy presence here.”

Kansas City is one of 12 cities selected to host a 2015 Navy Week, which is coordinated by the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO). NAVCO is a unit tasked with enhancing the Navy's brand image in areas with limited exposure to the Navy.
