CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Toasts, hailed to the United States, the commander-in-chief and the Army, echo throughout the hall as nearly 100 North Carolina Army National Guard engineers delight in a delectable meal during a Regimental Dining-Out at the Renaissance Suites Hotel here, Aug. 1, 2015.

The dining-out is a traditional formal dinner for service members or unit. The practice, adopted from customs practiced in monasteries and early universities in England, has become an integral part of the American military forces regimental mess.

The color guard posted the American and North Carolina state flags as the lights dimmed; sharpening the focal point to a single place setting with a candle flickering to acknowledge fallen comrades.

Richard Cantwell, the president of Odell International was the honored guest speaker. Cantwell graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1975 and went on to complete his 20-year career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ending 1995 as a decorated combat veteran.
Cantwell encouraged attendees to focus on nutrition, physical fitness and mental agility as a way of life.

“When you lead yourself better; you lead everybody else better,” said Cantrell.

The De Fleury Medal (named in honor of François-Louis Teissèdre de Fleury, a French Engineer in the Continental Army) honors individuals who have provided significant contributions to Army Engineering. De Fleury Award Recipients: Brig. Gen. James Trogdon, Lt. Col. Kenneth Cook, Maj. Mark McMahan, and Capt. William Dudley. Sgt. Robbie Beaver also received the Army Combat Engineer Sergeant (ACES) Squad Leader of the Year award.

Army Col. Luke Burnett, the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade Commander and Lt. Col. Cristina Moore, the 130th MEB Deputy Commander, challenged fellow engineers to revel in the spirit of the “Regimental Mess”; carrying the tradition forward by recognizing their best for good works!
