CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Mississippi River Commission, several Corps of Engineers generals, and local stakeholders paused a meeting onboard the Motor Vessel Mississippi Aug. 11 for the presentation of a length of service award to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District deputy for Programs and Project Management.
The Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy, assistant secretary of the Army for Civil Works, presented Mike Wilson with a certificate and 40-year service pin, which recognizes his federal service and significant contributions to the Nashville District.
“Anyone who has 40 years of service in an organization like the Corps of Engineers is pretty amazing,” Darcy said.
Wilson started his career with the Corps as an engineer co-op in 1975. He has served as chief of the Structural Section, project manager for Navigation Projects, technical manager for Flood Control Projects, structural engineer, and plan formulator for Special Projects. He served as chief of the Design Branch from February 2000 to January 2005. He was the 1997 Ohio River Division Project Manager of the Year.
Wilson thanked Darcy and said how much of an honor it was for her to conduct the ceremony and recognize him.
“It’s gone so fast and I’ve had such a blast,” Wilson said about his 40 years. “The Corps is such a great organization. They’ve been so kind to me and given me so many opportunities.”
Wilson said he would like to go back to his first year when he did a lot of design work and do it all over again.
“All that led up to me having the opportunity to be on this boat today, and I really appreciate that,” Wilson said. “In a way it’s sad that the 40 years has come and there probably aren’t many years left, but I’m very grateful for the years that I had with the Corps of Engineers, especially the Nashville District.”
Lt. Col. Stephen F. Murphy, Nashville District commander, noted that he is Wilson’s seventh district commander as DPM. So it’s no surprise that Wilson’s interaction with customers and stakeholders, knowledge of past projects and handle of the issues is a benefit to whole organization and to the commander, Murphy added.
“He’s just done a phenomenal job in 40 years of building relationships and earning trust, and it has paid off in so many instances,” Murphy said.
Murphy thanked the MRC and stakeholders in attendance for helping to recognize Wilson’s distinguished service to the Corps of Engineers. The commission met with community and business leaders in Clarksville, Tenn., while inspecting the Cumberland River.
Wilson is a native of Nashville, Tenn. He received a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Tech. University and a master of engineering degree in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University. He is a registered professional engineer in Tennessee and is active in the Society of American Military Engineers. He has also been active in the American Society of Civil Engineers, having served as the president of the Nashville Branch, secretary of the Tennessee Section, and as a delegate to the District 9 Council.
