CAMP CASEY, South Korea - The noncommissioned officers of the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, participated in a leadership challenge designed to fine-tune basic leadership fundamentals and strengthen esprit de corps among NCOs across the battalion, Aug. 7, 2015.

Randomly generated teams of 11 NCOs competed in a series of events that tested their physical fitness, confidence and ability to think critically.

The NCO Leadership Challenge is the first event of a greater effort to educate, develop and empower junior leaders involve themselves to everything from Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention to small unit training and enforcing standards.

Command Sgt. Major John Roberson worked with 1-5 Cav.’s company first sergeants to design the event for the unit’s sergeants and staff sergeants.

Soldiers competed in a series of events that included urban orienteering, combatives, weapons assembly and leader reaction exercises. One exercise involved creating an improvised raft and moving a casualty across on Olympic size pool.

The overall objective of the day according to Sgt. Brent Prier, Alpha Company, 1-5 Cav., was “to mix and match teams, I didn’t know anybody in my team, and we had to build team cohesion and camaraderie.”

1-5 Cav. NCOs ended their Leadership Challenge with team paintball and a barbecue.

During the battalions’ Korea rotation, NCOs will continue to plan similar events to instill the importance of camaraderie among junior NCOs.

“Teamwork and enforcing standards is the only way we can be successful” said Roberson. “I think the Soldiers did very well. I know they are tired, but I also know they have been challenged.”
