KILLEEN, Texas – The Logistics Readiness Center sponsored a back-to-school book bag drive at the Killeen Housing Authority, Aug. 13, and the children were delighted as they received school supplies.
“We do two projects a year,” said Zanna Rayner, the installation Department of Defense Activity Address Code coordinator. “Usually one for back to school and a Christmas-toy-drive project.”
Rayner and her team, the Subsistence Supply Management Office, posted flyers, posters and formed a committee to look for local areas that have the most needs.
“We went on the Killeen Independent School District website and took down the locations that needed meals to eat as well as school supplies,” said Rayner. “This area had the most school age children with the most needs.”
The kindergarten through fourth grade children ate the free meal that was provided, and they received back packs with school supplies in them.
“This event gives the children a boost to start their school year off with,” said Rayner. “It makes the children feel like they’re not being left out.”
According to Janice Taylor, the residence service coordinator for the KHA, many of the organizations in the community come out and support the children and families that are in need.
“The event is for the whole community in the Fort Hood and Killeen area,” said Taylor. “I had Soldiers that volunteered and sponsored the back to school supply for the residents in this area. The book bag drive today is strictly for non-residents.”
Other Fort Hood organizations support the community as well, said Taylor. They appreciate the chance to give back to the community.
“I love doing this,” said Rayner. “I love to see the reaction of the children, the thank you, and the hugs that we get.”
The LRC staff is looking forward to working on the next project in December, for a Christmas toy drive.
