FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Just over a week after taking command and only hours before boarding a plane to Kuwait, Maj. Gen. Paul C. Hurley Jr., commanding general, 1st Sustainment Command (Theater), hosted his first town hall meeting at the Main Post Theater.
During the Aug. 12 meeting Hurley shared a little about his Family, his education and his Army background. He also offered his initial thoughts, his top 10 priorities and way ahead for the command.
"We need to figure out a way to have a command environment where working hard, supporting combat operations, and having a good, positive command environment are not mutually exclusive,” said Hurley. “You can do both -- it’s been done before and I’m committed to making it happen here.”
During the meeting, Hurley discussed unit readiness and the importance of sustainment operations and the unit’s mission.
“Once you understand your commander’s intent, move out and execute, I’m not going to stand in your way,” Hurley said. “And leaders, you need to empower your folks and get the heck out of the way, because if you’re doing someone else’s job, you aren’t doing your own.”
Following his remarks, Hurley reached out to the audience for questions. Several 1st TSC Soldiers wanted to know Hurley’s thoughts about the command’s future.
Hurley pledged his support to the team and said he would keep First Team members, military and civilian, informed about changes or information concerning the 1st TSC.
Other topics of discussion during the commander’s meeting focused on leader development, discipline and standards, and Soldier and Family resiliency.
“I feel that Maj. Gen. Hurley really understands where the rubber meets the road, and the importance of getting back to the basics,” said Special Troops Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. Bruce Paulson, a Lacrosse, Wisconsin, native. “For us more seasoned Soldiers, it’s refreshing that he really understands that we’ve lost a lot over the 13 years of war.”
