JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Every year on Aug. 6, single service member’s day is recognized across the Army. As for Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program came up with creative ideas to bring single service members together.

“In 2014, the BOSS program came up with the color smash block party and the block party was mandatory for all single service members from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” said Sgt. Daniel Orozco, cable systems installer-maintainer sergeant, 17th Field Artillery Brigade.

Approximately 350 Soldiers participated and supported the color smash block party this year. Soldiers found the time during their busy work schedules to come to the event and meet people.

This year, the color smash block party was for single service members and geographical bachelors across JBLM and was held at JBLM Warrior Zone, Aug. 6. During the block party, service members had the opportunity to compete in color smash dance battles, communicate with others, play lawn games, win free prizes and more.

“Single service members had the opportunity to participate in a mandatory event and enjoy their day,” said Orozco. “This was a day of relaxation and entertainment.”

“As I walked around, I saw Soldiers looking bored so I encouraged them to communicate with others, play games, relax and have fun,” said Orozco. “The event was a great idea and a success for single service members, and the BOSS program wanted to give them a chance to clear their mind and loosen up.”

“I really enjoyed myself,” said Spc. Pedro Villafane, geospatial engineer specialist, 17th FA Brigade. “This year, we had more fun activities to be engaged at the single service member’s day, and I can’t wait to see what next year brings us. I’m looking forward to volunteering and helping the team setup.”

“I hope all service members had a tremendous time at the block party,” said Orozco. “I am looking forward to next year, helping with setup and making single service members happy. I am glad that I had the opportunity meet different service members.”

"The BOSS team would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success, and the team is looking forward to next year,’’ Orozco said.
