SAN ANTONIO – Staff Sgt. Richard Raper, a Danbury, Texas, native and infantryman with Eagle Troop, Sabre Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment reenlisted on the historic grounds of the Alamo at San Antonio, Aug. 6, 2015.
“My platoon sergeant told me to do something memorable,” said Raper. For a Texan, the Alamo seemed to be the best possible location for such a significant ceremony to occur, said the 11-year veteran with tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq under his belt.
His family had the opportunity to witness his reenlistment, including his wife, son, niece and father, as well as fellow Soldiers from his platoon.
His wife, Kat, said she was proud to be present at the event.
“We met in Afghanistan,” she said. She reminisced about her time serving as a Navy Seabee when she first met her husband.
For the past two years, Raper has been in the 3d Cavalry Regiment, and his platoon leader, 1st Lt. Dan Dougherty, administered the oath.
Following the re-enlistment, Dougherty coordinated a tour of the Alamo for professional development of his Troopers.
