CAMP SHELBY, Miss. - Many think of engineers as those who excel at designing and building, but in the Army, combat engineers excel at breaching and demolishing.
The engineers from 288th Engineering Company, of Houston, Mississippi, accompanied by assets from the 287th Engineering Company, of Lucedale, Mississippi, are training for obstacle breach operations on Aug. 8, 2015, at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center.
This training is supporting an Exportable Combat Training Capability (XCTC) exercise for the Mississippi Army National Guard's 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team.
“The engineers are used as an enabler for the maneuver force,“ said Capt. Seth M. Davidson, commander of the 288th Engineering Company. “Our engineer assets are going to move up where there [are] obstacles in place.”
“We are trying to get passed these obstacles as fast as possible; speed is important because this is where the enemy has chosen to engage us,” he said.
It is all part of the job for these engineers.
“Breaching concertina wire, breaching tank ditches, clearing mine fields - we are just basically doing combat engineer stuff,” said Sgt. Justin D. Tanner, a combat engineer with 287th Engineering Company.
They are learning this so they can in turn teach these skills to the newer soldiers, Tanner said.
Training is an important priority for both leaders and new soldiers.
“Anytime we learn something new, it’s a good thing,” said Pfc. Allen J. Poole, combat engineer with 287th Engineer Company. “The more you do it, the more you get your hands on it, the better you get at it”
