JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – Soldiers, families and civilians gathered outside I Corps Headquarters to say goodbye to Maj. Gen. Kenneth R. Dahl, deputy commanding general, I Corps and to welcome Canadian Brig. Gen. Dany Fortin, deputy commanding general for operations, here, July 31.

During the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza, commanding general, I Corps thanked Dahl for his dedicated service during his time at JBLM.

“Today is about saying thank you to a tremendous leader with exceptional vision and a superb Army family,” said Lanza. “That’s Ken and Celia Dahl.”

Lanza added that Dahl will leave a lasting impression for the next generation of Soldiers coming to I Corps.

“We’re very fortunate because ‘KD’ leaves behind a legacy of a balanced and ready force,” said Lanza. “He brought the leadership that the Army needed now and in the future. His support for Service members and families will continue to guide the Army for years to come. On behalf of Madeline [Lanza’s wife] and I and the entire team here, we say thank you to team Dahl and we know that wherever team Dahl goes the sun will always shine.”

The 17th Field Artillery Brigade honored Dahl with a canon salute during the ceremony. After the salute Soldiers of the brigade presented him a canon shell casing from the last round fired as a memento of his time at JBLM.

“There’s a few things that I have a hard time getting through emotionally,” Dahl said. “One of them is any mention of [my wife] Celia. Another one is when a superb artillery unit fires a salute on my behalf because I’m an artilleryman.”

Lanza also welcomed Fortin and his family to JBLM during the ceremony. Fortin too received a canon shell casing from the first round fired as a welcome to I Corps.

“We’re here to recognize a wonderful Canadian Army team, [in Dany and Madeleine],” said Lanza.

“Dany’s deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina, twice to Afghanistan, has done numerous exercises with the United States Army and really enhanced our inoperability with the Canadian Armed Forces,” said Lanza.

Fortin is replacing Canadian Brig. Gen. Carl Turenne, who recently left as the deputy commanding general for operations, I Corps.

Fortin expressed his appreciation for the opportunity of working on the I Corps team.

“I’m proud to be a part of this great team filled with such talented individuals,” he said. “It’s the first time for Madeleine and I in the Pacific Northwest and at JBLM. We look forward to enjoying what this incredible region has to offer and getting to know all of you.”
