Coast Guard, responders continue recovery operations in Saipan
SANTA RITA, Guam — Recovery operations in Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, continue Aug. 6.
Repairs to the aids to navigation in the harbor are complete and all aids are operating properly, however, a safety zone in the port remains in effect due to potentially hazardous conditions associated with damaged cargo containers.
As a result, cargo operation are limited and all vessels intending to enter Tanapag Harbor must obtain permission from the Coast Guard Sector Guam Captain of the Port to enter and operate within the port.
Coast Guard Sector Guam is working closely with the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in order to mitigate any potential hazards and resume unrestricted cargo operations. Once the potential hazards are mitigated, the current safety zone will be removed.
Vessels or persons needing to enter the safety zone need to contact the captain of the port or a representative by contacting 671-355-4835.
Equipment and personnel arrived to Saipan aboard Coast Guard Cutters Sequoia and Assateague Wednesday following Typhoon Soudelor. Coast Guard crews are working with partner agencies to reconstitute the port and help Saipan residents rebuild.
