PORT ORCHARD, Wash. – Military security forces, paramedics and other first responders gathered with local residents for National Night Out in Port Orchard, Washington, Aug. 4.
National Night Out, held near the city hall, is a national cohesive effort to promote community involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
“This is a great opportunity for us to have some one-on-one time with the local community,” said Master-at-Arms 1st Class David Gutierrez, from El Paso, Texas, Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor kennel master. “It’s fun to show off the equipment we use every day to local residents; the children seem to think it’s all really cool.”
The event included music, local vendors and a demonstration from the Naval Base Kitsap Canine Security Force.
“I’m really impressed with how many people showed up to the event,” said Chief Master-at-Arms Ryan Wells, from Los Angeles, attached to Naval Base Kitsap Security Force. “It is a really good chance for us to have a positive impact on the local community.”
There was a large turnout of local residents coming to show their support of the first responders and military in the area.
“It really matters to show our appreciation for all that these people do for us,” said Tanesha Williams, a Port Orchard resident. “It’s something people don’t even realize until your life is in their hands. Some of my family have worked as first responders and it really takes a lot out of a person.”
This is the 32nd year for National Night Out, "America's night out against crime," the chance for service members and family members to learn more about community resources and an opportunity to meet emergency services personnel who work hard to protect and serve the community.
