    1st Theater Sustainment Command

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The First Team welcomed a new commander during a change of command ceremony Monday at Ritz-Epps Physical Fitness Center.

Maj. Gen. Paul C. Hurley Jr., assumed command of 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) from Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams with the passing of the unit colors from Williams to Hurley.

“Commanding this unit is a tremendous challenge for any logistician, and the good ones want it, like Paul Hurley wanted this job,” said Lt. Gen. Patrick J. Donahue II, U.S. Forces Command deputy commanding general, who presided over the ceremony.

As the 1st TSC commander, Hurley is responsible for all sustainment operations in the U.S. Central Command area of operations.

Hurley, a self-proclaimed “Army brat”, has served in the Army for more than 29 years, beginning his military career in 1986 when he was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Texas A&M University. No stranger to Fort Bragg, Hurley has previously served three years of his career at the home of the airborne and special operations. His last assignment was across the installation as the U.S. FORSCOM deputy chief of staff and director of logistics.

“I give you my pledge to strive to continue the excellent leadership that Major General Williams has provided the First Team over the past 18 months,” said Hurley.

Williams, a native of West Palm Beach, Florida, commanded 1st TSC since January 2014. As the commander, he also has served as U.S. Army Central’s deputy commanding general for support.

“As we turn the page to a new and exciting chapter, I want to welcome Major General Hurley and his wife, Kathy, to the First Team,” said Williams. “Your tremendous reputation of leadership, competence and taking care of Soldiers and Families, precedes you. I know you will lead another exceptional chapter in TSC history.”

With Williams at the helm, 1st TSC closed 62 bases in Afghanistan, retrograded 18,800 shipping containers and 12,600 vehicles and provided 44 million meals.

“Darrell Williams provided the vision, the intent and most importantly, the trust that allowed all his subordinates to go forward and execute all of these extremely difficult tasks,” said Donahue.

Williams leaves the 1st TSC to be the commanding general of Fort Lee and the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command/Sustainment Center of Excellence at Fort Lee, Virginia.

“I am so excited to be here and be a part of this great organization,” said Hurley. “I am humbled and honored to serve as the commander and I pledge all of my energy and utmost efforts to be the commander that you deserve.”

Hurley’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters; Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters; Joint Service Achievement Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Combat Action Badge; Ranger Tab; Senior Parachutist Badge; Air Assault Badge; and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.

The 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) provides Theater Sustainment Mission Command to Army, joint, and multinational forces in support of U.S. Central Command Unified Land Operations in order to enable the combatant commander’s ability to prevent, shape, and win our nation’s wars.
