PUERTO LEMPIRA, Honduras - A detachment of Marines and Sailors with the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force- Southern Command began reconstruction on a kindergarten in Puerto Lempira, Honduras, July 10, 2015.

Kinder Irlanda, kindergarten to approximately 45 local children, is the first of three schools to be reconstructed by the engineers with the SPMAGTF-SC in Honduras.

“The school that was here before was in terrible condition. It was basically just a poor structure on top of a thin slab with gaps in between the sidings, with no shelter from the rain or wind,” said 2nd Lt. Erin Mick, an engineer platoon commander with the SPMAGTF-SC. “It just wasn’t very safe or stable.”

The construction of the school will be done in various phases. Phases one through four will be constructing the school from the foundation to the roof.

The fifth phase will give the students some things they didn’t have in their old school.

“In phase five we’re going to install a water catching system on the back of the building to give them accessibility to the rain water, bathrooms and, since before they had the walls lined with paper to write on, we’re going to give them chalk boards,” said Mick, a Fairplay, Colo. native.

Upon the completion of Kinder Irlanda the engineers of the SPMAGTF-SC will pack up and move on to the next school, Lucky Yaeayak Elementary.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be a part something like this. Everybody in the community has expressed an immense amount of gratitude, and all the kids are very curious and excited to see what we’re doing so it’s a very satisfying and exciting opportunity,” said Mick. “I do feel like we’re making a difference for the children. They’ll have a better facility here when we’re done than they did to start with, in an environment that’s a lot more conducive to learning.”
