BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. - Airmen of the 2nd Security Forces Squadron returned to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, July 14, following a six-month deployment to Saudi Arabia.

Barksdale's defenders provided security, performed routine law enforcement duties and monitored the base perimeter in support of Operations Inherent Resolve and Freedom Sentinel.

"Deployments like these are essential because we provide security and perimeter patrol to permanent party personnel," said Tech. Sgt. Kieran Cunningham, 2nd SFS unit deployment manager. "Our presence there gave base personnel the safe environment they needed to perform their part of the mission."

Whether at Barksdale or deployed, security of the base and personnel are the defenders top priority.

"We provided security for over 1,200 people on the installation. We performed installation entry control procedures, searched vehicles and personnel coming to the installation, keeping everyone residing there safe," said Staff Sgt. Joe McCraw, 2nd SFS installation patrolman.

Additionally, deployments like these give Airmen a chance to strengthen bonds with host nations while learning more about local culture.

"As the vehicle control officer, I was given the opportunity to work and interact with our host nation frequently," said Senior Airman Brent Laws, 2nd SFS installation patrolman. "I had the opportunity to learn about their customs and courtesies. It was a great experience."

Additionally, the deployment provided Airmen with the opportunity for personal and professional growth.

"I believe it's a good thing to work with the locals and build greater bonds, reinforcing a sense of unity between the host nation and the United States is always a plus," McCraw added.

Now home, the Airmen have the opportunity to enjoy things not available overseas on deployment.

"Some of the things I missed the most were the food, the vegetation, and the most important thing, spending time with my family," said McCraw.

Whatever the mission, wherever the location, Barksdale's defenders always uphold their motto, "Liberty We Defend," doing whatever is necessary to accomplish the mission.
