MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. – Construction on the newest homes in base housing here began July 20, making way for more than 150 new houses, a community center and the renovation of over 200 existing homes.
Contractors with Corvias Military Living, the company that manages McConnell base housing, began digging out the area for the basement of the first new house after months of planning and preparation. More than 190 of the oldest houses on base, all built in the 1950s, are scheduled to be razed while the new houses are erected in their place.
“Corvias has the opportunity through this public private venture to apply its skills and expertise as an experienced real estate developer for the benefit of McConnell Airmen and their families,” said John Pearsall, Corvias Military Living business director. “We will re-shape the landscape of McConnell family housing at an unprecedented rate with modern, functional homes and amenities that contribute to a greater sense of community.”
Pearsall said the McConnell project is one of six similar projects the company is working on at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska; Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina; Edwards Air Force Base, California; and Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field, both in Florida.
They are part of a $453 million contract awarded to Corvias Military in 2011, he said.
According to the Fiscal Year 2014 Economic Impact Analysis, McConnell is home to 18,000 personnel with more than 350 families residing in base housing. The large scale of this construction project provided job opportunities to many members of the local community with more than 80 people on-site daily once construction is in full swing.
“We are pleased at our early success in hiring local and small business contractors and expect this trend will continue into the future,” said Pearsall. “Corvias team members are very proud to be a McConnell partner and to be able to give back to the community where we live and work.”
Ninety five percent of program construction dollars have gone to small businesses, with 81 percent going to local businesses.
“The new construction is just another example of the great relationship we have with our local community,” said Col. Albert Miller, 22nd Air Refueling Wing commander. “Taking care of our Airmen and their families is one of our top priorities, so we are deeply appreciative of the community's support in helping provide new homes to members of Team McConnell.”
