FARGO, N.D. — Soldiers of the North Dakota Army National Guard’s Fargo-based 231st Brigade Support Battalion Logistical Support Element (BSB LSE) returned home from a nearly yearlong deployment overseas today. The group of 15 Soldiers arrived on two separate flights this evening, with one landing at Hector International Airport here and the other at the Bismarck Airport.

“Betsy and I are thrilled that 15 members of the North Dakota National Guard have come home to their families, their friends and their communities,” said Gov. Jack Dalrymple. “We are proud to welcome home members of the 231st Brigade Support Battalion who successfully completed their mission and carried on the North Dakota National Guard’s tradition of distinguished service. We are grateful to them and their families for their selfless sacrifice and we are forever in their debt.”

While deployed, the Soldiers provided logistical support to units in the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility, by managing supply, maintenance, transportation and cargo movement activities.

“Our Soldiers continue to serve at home and abroad. The Soldiers of the 231st BSB LSE took on an important mission for our state and nation, and we applaud them for their efforts,” said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general. “CENTCOM is dedicated to bringing peace and stability to a region of the world that is still unstable, and our logistics Soldiers provided critical support to units that are making a significant difference for the safety and security of our nation.”

This was the first deployment for the 231st BSB LSE, which replaced an active-duty U.S. Navy.

CENTCOM is one of nine unified combatant commands in the U.S. military. The command’s area of responsibility covers the “central” area of the globe and consists of 20 countries: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

Capt. Nicolette Daschendorf, of Bismarck, North Dakota, commands the unit and 1st Sgt. Kevin Magstadt, of Bismarck, is the senior enlisted member.

“It’s great to be home and I am grateful for the wonderful welcome we received when we got off the plane here at the Bismarck Airport,” said Magstadt. “All of our Soldiers performed their duties extremely well and all North Dakotans should be proud of their service.”

The unit is headquartered in Fargo, although the Soldiers hail from five North Dakota and Minnesota cities. Additionally, the group includes a pair of brothers, Sgt. 1st Class Nick Kane, of Horace, and Sgt. Tom Kane, of Fargo, who served together.
