FORT HOOD, Texas - Members of 4th Squadron “LongKnife,” 3rd Cavalry Regiment “Brave Rifles” presented information about the Stryker combat vehicle to British Brig. Gen. James Illingsworth and a small contingent from the British military attaché here Tuesday.
Lt. Col. Ryan Howell, 4th Squadron commander, 3rd CR, coordinated for an M1128 Mobile Gun System Stryker, and a brand new “Double V-Hull” Stryker for the British contingent to take a look at.
Stryker crews showed Illingsworth the ins-and-outs of the new and unique vehicles.
“We are coming into our training cycle now,” said Howell. “We do plan on training with the Strykers together with tanks and Bradleys at NTC [National Training Center].”
Illingsworth’s questions varied from integrating the new vehicles onto the battlefield, to the advantages of the MGS over a tank - something Howell was quick to answer.
“The MGS requires much less maintenance,” Howell said, having been a cavalryman for most of his career and spent countless hours on both tanks and Strykers.
LongKnife Stryker crews put the British general and officers on the vehicles for a small road march around Fort Hood that was arranged by Maj. Travis Tramell, operations officer for the squadron.
“The biggest advantage of Strykers is the mobility in urban terrain,” said Tramell. “The logistical needs of Strykers is also far less than that of the tanks and Bradleys in a heavy brigade combat team.”
The British attaché will be visiting a few other organizations on Fort Hood to continue our countries allied partnership and learn how to better integrate our two military’s’ forces.
