MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - Service members and families watched football players from the National Football League train during the NFL Star Experience aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, July 14.

This is the second year Todd Durkin, a professional performance-enhancement coach and personal trainer, brought the professional football players aboard the air station to show their support for the military.

During the event, NFL stars, including Drew Brees, Darren Sproles and Dominic Jones, participated in drills and exercises alongside the Miramar Falcons football team.

“It was a fun experience,” said Jones, a tight end for the Denver Broncos. “It was a little hot out here, but we got in a good workout in front of some great people.”

Jones said it was a privilege to have the opportunity to interact and talk with service members about what they do and to share some knowledge with the Falcons players.

“This is a great opportunity for us to get to see the NFL level of expertise and get feedback from them,” said Juan Reyes, a wide receiver with the Miramar Falcons. “Working with them gives us exposure to a training environment we aren’t used to, and that will make us better in the end.”

For 45 minutes, NFL and Falcons football player ran through drill after drill, giving the service members, watching and participating, a taste of what they do on a regular basis.

“When I look at these guys, all I see is dedication to their task and what they’re doing,” said Col. John P. Farnam, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar. “When you watch them out here, they give it all, they don’t waste a minute all the way through, and that runs parallel to what I see of our Marines. I see the same level of dedication, commitment and professionalism, and it’s really comforting to me to know that we have that in common.”

Aside from the grueling practice with the Falcons, the NFL stars also played with kids from the Youth and Teen Center before signing autographs for all the attendees.

“To watch these guys and how they are, not only with the Falcons, but with the kids and families as well, just shows that they are great people,” said Farnam. “They have the ability to reach out and communicate a message that people will never forget. They are building memories for the families and for Miramar and that really makes a difference to me.”
