MISAWA, Japan – Sailors assigned to Naval Air Facility Misawa and service members assigned to Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) competed in a tug-of-war tournament at Misawa Air Base, July 11.
Sixteen JSDF and five U.S. teams participated in the event. The teams utilized in-sync movements and uniform rhythm while pulling to give them the best chance at victory. The tournament’s setting promoted enthusiastic cheering like any typical sporting event atmosphere. After a long physical afternoon, that included more than 40 tug-of-war matches, a JSDF team emerged victorious once again.
But, not all was lost.
"These events enhance our relationship and give us a better way to meet people out of uniform while not in a serious situation so you can let your hair down. The competitive spirit comes out and really shows how people take pride in what they do on and off duty,” said Master Chief Electronics Technician Keith Weathers, from Pensacola, Florida.
The five U.S. Misawa-based teams were: The Chief Petty Officer’s Association (CPOA) “Old Goats," Naval Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department, 35th Fighter Wing’s Medical, Naval Air Facility, and Misawa Crossfit. The CPOA placed fourth in the tournament, the highest of all U.S. teams. The tournament is held annually and has never been won by a U.S. team.
Numerous social and sporting events are held annually between JSDF and U.S. forces at Misawa Air Base. For more news from Naval Air Facility Misawa, Japan, visit
