ASHBURN, Va. - In recognition of Independence Day, staff from the Ashburn Public Library in Ashburn, Va., invited Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers volunteers June 30 to meet and greet with children.
Guests at the event included families involved in the library’s summer reading program that focused on heroes— mostly fictional — but Spc. Dan Yeadon, a military police officer from the 289th Military Policy Company, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), attended as a nonfictional representative of the genre.
“I had no idea there was a theme for the event,” said Yeadon. “When I volunteered to go it was presented to us as an opportunity to go and interact with kids — some who had never seen a Soldier up close before.”
Red, white and blue-themed crafts and templates to write letters for service members were provided for the 74 attendees.
Yeadon brought along official Army gear for the kids to try on including advanced combat uniforms, patrol caps, helmets and body armor worn by Soldiers and law enforcement officers.
“I have two nieces and nephews of my own,” said Yeadon. “I love the outreach opportunities, and being able to leave a good memory with the children makes my day.”
