CAPTAIN SLADE CUTTER PARK-NORFOLK, Va. – Pitcher Richard Beverly started the game with a shaky first inning giving up eight runs, but with some strong pitching and good defense, the G-6 Sons of Pitchers beat the G-4 Bulldogs 12-11 for the base softball championship July 1.

The Bulldogs came into the game as the regular season champions with a 6-2 record. Having lost the first game of the finals in a double elimination tournament, they needed to find a win. They would not find it.

“We came out with a lot of bats. They went cold in the middle, but we were able to swing the bats in the end,” said Bulldogs acting coach Richard Walker. “Great game, 12-11. I give G-6 all the credit. They beat us two games in a row.”

The Bulldogs held a two-run lead heading into the 2nd inning. As their bats started to get cold, the Sons of Pitchers were just heating up.

After scoring six runs in the 1st, the Sons of Pitchers added three runs in the 2nd and 4th innings, which proved in the end to be enough for the win.

“We had some really good hits, some really good defense. Unfortunately, we missed some easy fly balls in the outfield, but with the wind blowing the way it was today it was kind of difficult judging them,” said Sons of Pitchers coach Brian Wright. “Overall, we held them.”

The score was 12-8 in favor of the Sons of Pitchers at the top of the 6th. All they needed to do was prevent the Bulldogs from tying or taking the lead and the championship was theirs.

With all the pressure on pitcher Beverly, he hit Steve Ware in the leg giving the bulldogs a runner on 1st. Then with the runner on first, Beverly walked the next batter. It wasn’t a good start to the final inning of a championship game.

After Matthew Travis and Leigh Williams both struck out, things seemed to be looking better for the pitcher. Then Tyrone Baugh hit a two-run triple bringing the score to 12-10.

With Jamie Grifaldo hitting a single bringing another runner home, the tying run was coming to the plate. Lenwood Hall hit one more single bring in the runner and the Bulldogs to 12-11.

On Beverly’s last pitch, Aeryk Church hit a fly ball to left field where Nicholas Tverdosi was there to make the catch and end the game. Thanks to the catch, the Sons of Pitchers ended the game and the season as champions.
