MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – To conclude the Chief Master Sgt. Aubert E. Dozier Airman Leadership School at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, a graduation is held and four awards are given out to highlight the exceptional graduates of each class. One particular award, the John L. Levitow award, is given to the Airman who has demonstrated the most outstanding leadership and scholastic qualities of the class.

Senior Airman Kevin Anderson, 6th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, didn’t expect to hear his name called as the audience waited in anticipation for the announcement of ALS class 15-E’s Levitow winner.

“I definitely didn’t expect to win,” said Anderson. “It’s a big deal because the instructors and my peers voted.”

Anderson, a Pensacola, Florida, native, says it took him a little time to become comfortable in ALS.

“I was nervous at first,” says Anderson. “I started off a little rocky, but after a while everything came together.”

Prior to enlisting in October 2009, Anderson remembers his life coming to a halt after high school. He decided he had to make an important decision and joined the world’s greatest Air Force, so he could become a part of something bigger than himself.

Since then, Anderson says, he feels he has progressed as a professional; working on the flightline and as a provider for his family.

At the end of his ALS graduation, Anderson summed up his time in ALS and his feelings about winning the Levitow.

“There were multiple memories of my peers and I having a great time together, which made it a good experience,” said Anderson. “Winning this award … it lets me know that I’m doing something right.”
