BAGHDAD – A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device exploded in the Sheikh Umar neighborhood of the eastern Baghdad district of Rusafa killing nine Iraqi civilians at approximately 10:20 a.m. March 3.
The blast also wounded three Iraqi army soldiers, two Abna al-Iraq, or Sons of Iraq, and two Iraqi civilians.
"A bomber targeted innocent Iraqi civilians near an Iraqi army checkpoint," said Col. Allen Batschelet, Multi-National Division - Baghdad chief of staff. "This marks the second time today criminals used a vehicle laden with explosives in their cowardly attacks directed against innocent Iraqi civilians."
The attack occurred near an Iraqi army checkpoint approximately three hours after an earlier SVBIED attack in Rusafa.
