PHOENIX – A former Army Cpl. and Vietnam veteran received his Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) during a ceremony here July 7.

After 43 years the wait is over for former Army Cpl. Mark Cox who received his CIB during a ceremony hosted by the Arizona Army National Guard at Papago Park Military Reservation.

Army Col. Kipling Kahler, the senior CIB badge wearer in the Arizona National Guard, presented the award.

“I am truly honored to present this award to you. The actions taken during your time in service is what inspires us to do what we do,” said Kahler.

Cox was drafted into the 101st Airborne in 1970 and served in Vietnam until 1972. After completing his tour and returning home he was called back into service under the ready reserve to help train National Guard infantry units at Fort Riley, Kansas, as they were preparing to deploy to Vietnam.

“I look back on my military service and am grateful for everything the Army did for me then and is doing for me now,” said Cox. “To the infantryman, the CIB holds special meaning. This award is not just for me but for all the soldiers that served by my side.”

The CIB is awarded to personnel in the grade of Colonel or below with an Infantry or Special Forces military occupational specialty who have satisfactorily performed their duties when the unit was engaged in active ground combat.
