SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Four-thousand members of the New York Army National Guard's 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and supporting elements will train at Fort Drum July 11-July 31 for an intense annual training exercise.

Key training events this summer include air assault operations, platoon level situational exercises and tactical maneuvers, artillery firing, infantry live fire, logistics support operations and chemical, biological and radiological training.

Motorists may see increased military traffic on highways and other roads as Army National Guard units move to and from Fort Drum.
The 27th Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in Syracuse but with units across the state, is using this annual training period to provide each unit with an experience similar to a combat training center.

This training concept is known as Exportable Combat Training Capability or XCTC for short. XCTC allows the brigade's Soldiers and leaders to hone their combat skills for what the Army defines as "decisive action."

The brigade will use its XCTC experience as a template to prepare for a Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) rotation scheduled for 2016.

JRTC is one of the Army's three combat training centers resourced to train brigade task forces, both Active Duty and National Guard, and their subordinate elements in a realistic operational environment. Located at Fort Polk Louisiana, JRTC is considered the "Super Bowl" of Army training and is designed to test brigades which may deploy.

The brigade last conducted this training in 2001.

"This year's challenging annual training exercises will make our Soldiers, leaders, and units better. The hard work we do at Fort Drum this year will set the conditions for success when the brigade goes to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana next year," Col. Joe Biehler, Commander, 27th Infantry Brigade said.

Units participating in the training are:

    • The 1st Battalion 69th Infantry headquartered in New York City with companies in Farmingdale, and Camp Smith near Peekskill, which will conduct infantry tactics, a live fire exercise and roving lane missions during the field training exercise.

    • The 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry, headquartered in Utica, with companies in Geneseo, Ogdensburg, Saranac Lake, Glenville and Gloversville will conduct Sniper training along with tactical and roving lane missions.

    • The 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry, headquartered in Niagara Falls, with companies in Niagara Falls, Geneva, Jamestown and Buffalo will conduct scout and reconnaissance, in this case urban and roving lane missions.

    • The 1st Battalion 258th Field Artillery from Jamaica Queens with batteries in The Bronx and New Windsor will conduct maneuvers and firing drills.

    • The 427th Brigade Support Battalion headquartered in Syracuse with companies in Rochester, Fort Drum and Buffalo will conduct Area Security, and Base Defense logistics operations, commonly referred to as LOGPAC.

    • And the 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion headquartered in Syracuse with companies in Buffalo, Lockport and Rochester will conduct Area Security and other Chemical, Biological Radiological, Nuclear (CBRNE) and Military Police (MP) training.

The 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation Battalion, an element of the New York Army National Guard's 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade, will also be training at Fort Drum during this period and provide support to the 27th Brigade Soldiers.

The battalions will also train Soldiers in map reading and navigation, first aid tasks, responding to an enemy attack, and conduct consolidated battle drills. Battle drills are skills Soldiers rehearse repeatedly until they become automatic.

The 27th Brigade Combat Team was originally the 27th Division of the New York National Guard. Soldiers of the 27th Infantry Division fought in Belgium in World War I and invaded Saipan, Makin and Okinawa during World War II.

The brigade deployed to Afghanistan in 2008-2009 and to Kuwait in 2012 and elements of the brigade deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2005.

The 27th Brigade Soldiers also responded to Tropical Storms Irene and Lee in 2011, and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

The 27th brigade is nicknamed the "Orion" brigade. The term refers to the "hunter" of Greek mythology as well as to the last name of Major Gen. John F. O'Ryan who commanded the 27th Division during World War I. He was also the only National Guard division commander to lead his unit throughout World War I.

O'Ryan's name was incorporated into the division's distinctive patch when the patch designers incorporated the constellation Orion into the design.
