INDIAN OCEAN – Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) celebrated the Fourth of July with a steel beach picnic.

The Chief Petty Officer Association (CPOA) and the Wardroom hosted the event increasing fellowship and morale amongst their shipmates.

“The steel beach picnic is a great event for the crew to take some time off and enjoy some down time between operations,” said Command Master Chief Steven Bronder. “This event is being sponsored by khaki leadership so it’s a good way for us to give back to the crew and show them that we appreciate them.”

Aerographer’s Mate 1st Class Daniel Squire who is temporarily assigned to the Ashland for the patrol says he plans on spending the rest of his Fourth relaxing and emailing family.

“For me it makes it easier when you can think of your family and the people who are back home supporting you. Events like this gives you the time to stop and remember why you’re out here doing this,” said Squire.

The picnic included barbecue ribs, tender steaks, kebabs, burgers, music, and a cake cutting ceremony.

Bronder says the end goal of the celebration is to ensure service members know what their purpose is while being a part of a diverse team.

“We hope to build camaraderie and teamwork so that they understand that we’re all out here serving a common purpose,” said Bronder. “Even though things can get tough at times, this gives us a chance to let loose and enjoy each other’s company.”

Ashland is assigned to the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group and is currently on patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
