FORT HOOD, Texas - Keep Texas Beautiful recognized the Fort Hood Sentinel, Recycle Center and Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division as winners of the 2015 Weekly Large Community Newspaper and Civic Program Award. DPW Environmental also won third place for the Military Award.

“It’s great recognition for what we are doing here at Fort Hood,” said Mike Bush, recycle operations manager. “Awards like this are an excellent way to recognize our comprehensive environmental and recycle programs.”

Each year, Keep Texas Beautiful acknowledges deserving senior citizens, community groups, individuals, civic organizations, media, government entities and law enforcement officials for their commitment to litter prevention and cleanup, illegal dumping enforcement, education and publicity of environmental issues and community beautification.

The Sentinel teamed up with DPW Environmental to promote the installation’s environmental programs, services and events like America Recycles Day, Net Zero Waste 2020, Earth Day and Arbor Day.

“It is our job, with the Directorate of Public Works, Environmental, as an alliance, to get the word out to the Fort Hood community,” said Todd Pruden, Sentinel editor. “DPW does a great job on environmental issues. They are the lone star in Central Texas, leading the way to reduce waste through their Net Zero Waste 2020 initiative.”

Both the Sentinel and DPW Environmental continuously work together to promote environmental stewardship at all levels through print and online media.

“We educate the community on the policies and practices that are happening at the Great Place, environmentally,” Pruden said. “We want to make sure that the Fort Hood community knows what programs are available.”

One the programs that continues to set the standard for the Army is recycle.

Recycling more than 8,000 tons each year, the program was recognized for its outstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, recycling and outreach efforts.

With more than 1,800 blue recycle containers across the installation, it is too easy to find one for your recyclable goods. The program continues to expand its services to accept recyclables like Styrofoam, hard drives, all plastics 1 through 7, metal and plastic blinds, holiday lights and shoes.

“Fort Hood Recycle continues to find more products to recycle,

continues to be more efficient in our operations and looks to partner with stakeholders in the region to find solutions to recycling,” Bush said.

Bush and his team have helped the recycle program to identify new recyclables and bring in more material, making recycling green on both ends - saving resources and making money.

“Team work and creativity has taken our program to the next level,” Bush said.

With plans of launching a single stream recycling program next year, recycling will be easier for everyone.

“Going single stream will help us,” Bush said. “We expect to see a huge increase in participation and it will continue to save us time, increase our efficiency and make us a better operation overall.”

The honors recognize the efforts of the Fort Hood Sentinel, Recycle Center and DPW Environmental to work together to enhance the community, increase environmental awareness through coordination and partnerships and protect the Texas environment.

Keep Texas Beautiful, a statewide grassroots environmental and community improvement nonprofit, strives to educate and engage Texans to take responsibility for improving their community environment.
