RACINOVIC, Croatia - Some will choose to spend their Minnesota summer with barbecues, yard work and other outside summertime fun. One Minnesota National Guardsman will spend three weeks of his summer in Croatia working on a Humanitarian Civic Assistance project made possible by U.S. European Command.

He will be helping the citizens of Racinovic rebuild their community center after a devastating flood to the area last May.

Spc. Tristen Pfaff, a carpenter/masonry specialist with the 851st Vertical Engineer Company out of Camp Ripley, Minnesota, will sacrifice three weeks of the beautiful Minnesota summer to serve with 30 other members of his unit in a tiny village.

“It’s my first mission overseas, and it’s been a great experience,” said Pfaff. “The people of the village have been unbelievable with their hospitality.”

Many members of the team are fairly new to the military and the unit and for Pfaff and some of his peers this is their first experience overseas. The project includes many long days of intense physical labor to replace the damages caused by the flooding and make sure the building is solid for decades to come.

“I really like helping people and it’s been great to eat, sleep and work in the village we are helping,” said Pfaff. “I have enjoyed my time here and I would definitely volunteer for another mission like this.”
