MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS) 373 participated in a unit field meet aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, June 26.

The field meet consisted of a grenade toss, relay race, tug-of-war, “dizzy izzy,” Humvee pull and pullup competition.

The unit hosts the event annually to celebrate the birthday of MWSS-373.

The unit was split into four teams based on their company. Engineer Company leads Marines in route reconnaissance, demolitions, and mine and countermine warfare. Motor Transport Company operates and maintains tactical military vehicles. Headquarters and Service Squadron includes administration, logistics, and operations. Airfield Operations are responsible for directing military aircraft on the runway to ensure their safe departures and arrivals.

The field meet is part of a yearlong competition held between each company of MWSS-373. The unit competes in several different events throughout the year like the obstacles courses and physical training events. At the end of the year, the company with the most points wins the unit trophy.

Before the event, Lt. Col. Brian T. Grana, commanding officer of MWSS-373, awarded red shirts to Marines who exhibiting superior performance and leadership skills.

“You’re leading by example,” said Sgt. Travis Warren, a utilities maintenance chief with MWSS-373. “You’re expected to be at a higher standard even more than a normal [noncommissioned officer] would expect.”

Marines with MWSS-373 look forward to the events of the yearlong competition.

“With any Marine competition, [it] always builds not only the spirit of performance but camaraderie as well,” said Sgt. James D. Wynn, an intelligence chief with MWSS-373.

The field meet ended with Motor Transport Company coming in first place followed by Engineer Company, Headquarters and Service Company, and Airfield Operations.
