JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - The commanding general of Human Resources Command (HRC) led a professional development session for officers at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, June 25, to discuss key changes that will impact the future of the Army.

Maj. Gen. Thomas C. Seamands discussed numerous topics including: Officer professional development, Officer and Non-Commissioned Officer Evaluation Reports, promotions and downsizing.

After the brief officers had the opportunity to ask questions that may affect them or their peers.

“(The Army) is a profession,” Seamands said. “So understanding as much as they can about the profession, what we do and what their expectations should be, the better informed they’ll be.

"Part of our ability to take care of Soldiers and officers across the Army is the ability to communicate with them about what we’re doing and understand the impacts of policies and procedures we put in place.”

According to Seamands, Army officials will make tough choices in the future, especially with downsizing which may negatively impact some careers. The Army has set programs in place to help them along the way.

“One of the things we’ve done very aggressively is put a good transition plan together,” Seamands said. “So when an NCO or an officer is told that they have to leave early they are set up for success and have a smooth takeoff to whatever is after the Army.”

He added that the Army is giving them a year to transition out of the Army instead of the 90 or 180 days that they used to receive.

We have a very aggressive program that sets them up for success and helps them to write resumes to have a successful life after they take off the uniform, Seamands said.

“Behind the numbers of the drawdown are Soldiers and their families, their dreams, aspirations and goals. It’s important for us to never lose sight of the fact that there are Soldiers involved in the process,” he added.

Capt. Lauren Yoon, personnel administration officer in charge, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, I Corps, said staying current and up to date on changes is important.

“The Road Show visit is letting us know what is going on in the big Army from the HRC standpoint,” she said.

She added that as an administrative officer, she receives a lot of questions for Soldiers on many of the topics discussed during the session. The information will help assist Soldiers with their issues.

“I’m happy that they were here,” she said. “It reiterates what we need to do and what we need to get done for our Soldiers.”
