MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. – The Officer Spouses Club recently awarded seven scholarships to military family members to help support their journeys in higher education and additional award money to local charitable award organizations in a Scholarship and Charitable Distribution Awards Ceremony June 2.

“One of the main missions of the Officer Spouses Club is raising money for scholarships and charitable organizations to aid military families,” said Kristen Jones, a family readiness officer aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River.

Six of the awarded scholarships went to local graduating high school students, preparing to begin their college career.

“When we look at the applicants, we are looking for people who set themselves apart from their peers,” said Jones. “We want the students who are exceptional and well rounded. They need to have volunteer experience and to have contributed to their local community.”

The OSC raises money year round to donate to charitable organizations and scholarship funds.

“This year we had $3,500 to give out,” said Jones. “This is just one way the OSC gives back to the military community and its families.”

According to the OSC, the purpose of the scholarships has always been and will continue to support our local military families and their pursuit of furthering their educational goals. The scholarships are awarded in the spring to benefit military families through charitable organizations and scholarship programs.

During the ceremony, OSC also distributed money to various charitable organizations that help out local military families.

“There were 13 charitable organizations that received award money to allow them to continue their mission assisting military families,” said Jones.

The organizations included the American Red Cross, Children’s Museum of Jacksonville, Dogs on Deployment, USO, Lejeune High School USMC JROTC, Lejeune Theatre Guild, Military Spouse of Strength, Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, the Semper Fi Fund, Onslow Pregnancy Recourse Center, Onslow Care givers Inc., National Montford Point Marine Association and United Through Reading.
