MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Marine Aircraft Group 29 bid farewell to Col. James Jenkins, outgoing commanding officer for the past two years and welcomed Col. Sean Salene as the new commander during a change of command ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River June 4.

The ceremony marked the beginning of new journeys in the careers of two leaders in Marine Corps aviation.

“Jim Jenkins is a phenomenal Marine, father, husband and human being,” said Maj. Gen. Robert Hedelund, commanding general of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “You are beginning a journey that we know you are going to have a wonderful time doing. The leadership transition here could not be more seamless.”

Jenkins, who served as the commanding officer of MAG-29 since May 29, set the example for his Marines and his unit throughout his leadership time at MAG-29, said Hedelund.

“Col. Jenkins exemplifies what we here at 2nd MAW call ‘what matters to us,’” said Hedelund. “That is operational excellence, standards and respect and care for all, he lives it every single day. Everybody wants to be on Jim Jenkins' team.”

As Jenkins departs MAG-29, he humbly ensured his guest that his success was due to the help of his Marines and his family.

“Marines, it has been my honor to serve you and serve beside you over the past two years,” said Jenkins, as he spoke to his Marines in formation. “SUMO you are going to make this MAG better than it has ever been and have a great time doing it.”

After receiving the colors from Jenkins, Salene spoke firmly about the units’ future and ensured the Marines and audience that no matter what the mission or task, MAG-29 would remain strong and ready for whatever comes next.

“We have been at war a long time,” said Salene. “But I suspect we are only at the end of the beginning. We will need the best the Marines and sailors that these Marines have in order to provide 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force a middle weight option, as the combat aviation element for the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. There are those who would threaten our way of life, and these Marines and sailors stand ready to fulfill their oath.”
