AURORA, Colo. - Dozens of Team Buckley military members and their spouses gathered to get an inside look at the units on Buckley Air Force Base and their various missions July 17 on Buckley AFB as part of the first Spouse Appreciation tours.
The group started their tour at the 460th Space Wing headquarters building and made their way to the Mission Control Station where they got an inside peak into the radomes, and finished the tour with an up close look at the helicopters at the Army Aviation Support Facility.
“This is the first time we’ve ever done this,” said Col. John Wagner, 460th Space Wing commander. “So you are the placeholder of a new era for the 460th Space Wing and Buckley Air Force Base. I’m truly excited that you’re all here and we’re able to do this.”
During their first stop on the tour, the group of spouses split into two groups. One group toured the inside of a radome, the other received a brief from Maj. Gregory Vice, 2nd Space Warning Squadron director of operations, about the space mission and satellites. After each group finished, they switched.
The spouses then stopped at the Colorado Army National Guard’s AASF. There they saw the COARNG’s various helicopters to include, Black Hawks, Chinooks and Lakotas.
“It’s pretty great to see the restricted area, that was a big surprise,” said Shyleshia Daire, a Buckley spouse. “I’m at home and I hear him say a few things every now and then, but it’s nothing like being able to physically experience it. And also to see the Black Hawks and realize that they’re real and not like a display or something.”
Military spouses play an important role in the success of the military today, said Chief Master Sgt. Brian Kruzelnick, 460th Space Wing command chief.
“Thank you for your service, I don’t know if people tell you that enough,” Kruzelnick said to the military spouses. “Your husband or wife, they volunteered. You did not. Every place they go, you go, you don’t really have a say in it. You do it each and every day and you do it proudly and you don’t get any extra money for it or any cool medals like we get sometimes but everything that your spouse has been able to accomplish is thanks to the support that you give. I’d like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your service.”
