    173rd Airborne Brigade

YAVORIV, Ukraine – Paratroopers from the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade visited the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine, June 18, 2015, to discuss their training mission and answer questions from students as they began the start of the second rotation of Fearless Guardian.

Fearless Guardian is the name for the Congress-approved, Departments of State and Defense initiative to train the Ukraine national guard under the Global Security Contingency Fund-Ukraine. The U.S. military and the training they provide are at the request of the Ukrainian government. Paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade are in Ukraine for the second of several planned rotations to train Ukraine's newly-formed national guard as part of Fearless Guardian, which is scheduled to last six months.

Lt. Col. Robert Brown, commander of 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, and Capt. Charles Shields, the battalion, informed Catholic University students and members of the Ukrainian military in the audience about the brigade’s mission and the success achieved during the first rotation of Fearless Guardian.

After an introduction by Brown, the audience asked questions to the commander and chaplain about the mission.

One student asked how the Ukrainian national guard performed with their current set of equipment. Brown responded that each soldier had the necessary equipment to carry out their training and that the gear they are using is similar to that used by the American paratroopers.

Shields had an opportunity to express his views on the Ukrainian national guardsmen when a student asked him how he assessed the morale of the soldiers since the Ukrainian national guard only recently implemented the chaplain's services.

“I have only been in Ukraine for one week,” said Shields. “What I see are young soldiers in the Ukrainian national guard who are warriors, sheep dogs ready to guard their herd from wolves.”
