RIGA, Latvia – The KC-135 Stratotanker has excelled as an aerial military refueling aircraft for more than 50 years. It has been photographed countless times, from every angle imaginable, while conducting refueling missions. So when Lt. Col. John Hall, commander of the Michigan National Guard 126 Press Camp Headquarters, Sgt. 1st Class Adam Swager, 126 PCH chief public affairs non-commissioned officer and Angela Simpson, MING deputy public information officer, rode along with a Pennsylvania National Guard crew during a refueling mission, June 17, 2015, in support of Saber Strike 2015 they were looking for creative novelties.
While the funky, hotel-borrowed road vest, cute, ‘follow-me’ lead car, artsy, mushroom-like engine spiral and unique wing walker equipment sign and introductory pamphlet might be considered ‘unimportant’ KC-135 details, the support that the aerial refueling plane provides to exercises like Saber Strike 15 is invaluable.
Saber Strike is a long-standing U.S. Army Europe-led cooperative training exercise designed to promote stability in the Baltic area. Exercises in support of Saber Strike 15 took place across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The exercises are designed to improve joint operational capability in a range of missions and to prepare participating nations to support multinational contingency operations. Saber Strike 15 involved more than 6,000 participants from 13 different nations.
