CLAY NATIONAL GUARD CENTER, MARIETTA, Ga. – Jay and Jean York, parents of the newly promoted Sgt. Maj. Jason D. York, “pin” on new rank to his Army Service Uniform during a ceremony at the 122nd Regional Training Institutes auditorium. York served 78th Troop Command as the 122 RTI operations noncommissioned officer and first sergeant, and will continue his senior leadership role within the 560th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.
Sergeant Major York was raised in Boaz, Alabama, and began his military service in 1991 at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served on active as a light infantry rifleman, a fire team leader and a Bradley Fighting Vehicle gunner until 1993. York returned to Alabama to graduate from Columbia Southern University, then started a private business in Boaz, Alabama.
As a Soldier for life, York continued to serve part time with the Army National Guard and participated in state side missions such as Operation Homeland Guard following 9/11 and support of Hurricane Katrina. Federal deployments took him to Southwest Asia, Iraq and Rwanda.
York did not have this successful career without the support of family and friends. York's father Jay, also served in the miltary creating a path that his son would follow. Mentorship from Soldiers like Command Sgt. Maj. (retired) Lance Rygmyr, who presented York a personalized challenge coin during his promotion ceremony on June 13, fueled his desire to educate and train Soldiers, leading to York serving as the NCO in charge of the Best Warrior Competition for the Georgia Army National Guard.
York resides in Dallas, Georgia, with his wife and children.
