    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The air was filled with shouts of encouragement and banter. Cries of “pull” “keep going” and “you’ve got this” echoed across the field. A regiment was at war with itself.

Marines and sailors with Headquarters Regiment, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, participated in the unit’s 2nd annual field meet at the Goettge Memorial Field House aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, June 12.

The field meet gave the Marines a break in their everyday routines and a chance to have fun in order to balance their daily duties with what Col. Gary Keim, the regimental commander, calls, “will training.”

“Will is what makes you want to be a better Marine, enjoy the Marine Corps and build camaraderie,” Keim said. “We need to find time in our training schedules to maintain the balance between skill and will, no matter how busy we are.”

Each competition required the participation of Marines of all ranks to work together as a team toward a common goal; take home the Commander’s Cup.

“The event is about unity and cohesion,” said Gunnery Sgt. Laura Maguire, the event coordinator for the field meet with the regiment. “When you’re stuck in the office, you don’t have an opportunity to get out and have fun with your Marines. This is a great experience.”

The companies competed in ten events to include tug-of-war, tricycle relay with alcohol simulation glasses, longest golf drive and 200-meter relay in military oriented protective posture suits.

The end of the events saw a tie between Service Company and Food Service Company, and required a tie breaker. Both companies chose one Marine to compete in three minutes of eight-count bodybuilders, a multi-part exercise that combines cardio and resistance training. Service Company claimed victory by one repetition and was awarded the Commander’s Cup to display proudly until next year’s competition.

“You will not fulfil your complete potential as a Marine if you are singularly focused on your specialty,” Keim said. “It’s about the relationships you build with those in your squad, your platoon, and your company. Events like this help bind us together and increase that desire to work for each other.”
