COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - More than 600 visitors including Navy Reserve Sailors and veterans visited “The Moving Wall” located at Kit Carson Memorial Park outside the main gate of Fort Carson, The Mountain Post.

The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the United States since 1984. It carries more than 58,000 names of dead or missing service men and women. Of these names, more than 17,000 belong to Sailors and Marines.

“The Moving Wall was created to give the public and every Vietnam Veteran an opportunity to see the wall and pay their respects to fallen service members.” said Michelle Steiner with the 7247th Medical Support Unit Medical Evaluation Board Remote Operating Center at Fort Carson. The memorial will travel to more than 30 cities this year, she said.

The Moving Wall stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices during the Vietnam War and allows people the opportunity to visit loved ones in their home town who otherwise may not be able to travel to Washington, D.C.

“Visiting the Vietnam traveling memorial wall was very eye opening for me,” said Information System Technician 2nd Class Danielle Beideman. “It represents a generation that was lost in the war and helps me to never forget the men and women who sacrificed their lives.”

Two structures of The Moving Wall travel throughout the United States from April to November, spending one week at a time at each city.

“I was able to honor the memory of our beloved cousin, Daniel B. Herrel, a member of the US Army who fought in Vietnam and was killed on October 23, 1967,” said Logistics Specialist Seaman David Highfill. “I had very somber feelings seeing all the names on the wall of people who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service of this great country by aiding another.”
