FORT BLISS, Texas - Employees of the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Safety conducted a Safety Stand-down Day, May 14, at Sage Hall in order to reinforce the importance of safety in their lives.

Employees were able to understand the dangers of drunken driving by wearing beer goggles and maneuvering a go-cart. Employees also received tips on summer water safety and on how to apply it to family trips. The Red Cross gave a class on how to mitigate home hazards to protect family members.

“We have around 200 in attendance today,” said Roger Waters, DPTMS division chief. “We have over 350 people in DPTMS so the rest have to continue their mission on the range and other areas where we have critical missions.”

Abel Arevalo, maintenance management assistant, DPTMS, attempted to drive the go-cart around the obstacle marked with mini-traffic cones.

“It was difficult,” Arevalo said. “I was misjudging the cones and running them over. It did feel like I was drunk.”

Arevalo has worked with DPTMS for over nine years and conducts safety every day he is in the motor pool, yet he believes people should recognize safety at home.

“There are a lot of areas of safety, from barbequing to driving,” Arevalo said. “You got to think safety every day, every moment.”

Taking the time to recognize safety is an annual requirement for the Army, and civilian employees are no exception. According to Waters, they task someone every year and every employee within the directorate understands they have a responsibility to support this event.

Yadira Barrios, Safety Officer, DPTMS, was in charge of organizing and planning the event.

“I want to thank all the instructors for coming out and coordinating with me to make the Safety day happen,” Barrios said. “It took over a month and a half of planning to put everything together.”
