CAMP DAWSON, W.Va. - As the sun peeks over the high mountains surrounding the Camp Dawson training site, the District of Columbia Army National Guard Joint Force Headquarters Detachment (DCARNG JFHQ) conducts annual training from May 18-21, 2015.

Excited and wide-eyed Soldiers arrive prepared to embark through a series of training events which test their confidence and inner personal skills while reinforcing the strength of the team.

“The purpose of this year’s annual training is to encourage team building, unit cohesion, self confidence, and encourage junior leader development in our young soldiers,” said Maj. Christopher York, commander of the DCARNG JFHQ.

Soldiers displayed their self confidence and team building skills during the five day annual training through various events, to include an obstacle course, combat water survival, M9 weapons qualification, shotgun familiarization and the NBC gas chamber.

“Seeing the smiles and interactions of the Soldiers during the combat water survival training shows the unit is coming together,” said 1st Sgt. Robert Hull, JFHQ NCOIC.

Newly transitioned member from the Mobilization Augmentation Command, First Lieutenant Chiquita Mack explains, “This training gives many young Soldiers the ability to show their [leadership] skills. For me, it allows me to actually lead training events which is something I have not been able to do”.

New members of the JFHQ expressed satisfaction with the structure and execution of the 2015 annual training compared to different past experiences with other units outside of the DC National Guard.

“This is a great experience overall. I have never shot an M9 or a shotgun while in my other units but now I have the chance to,” said Spc. Rocio Reynoso, a prior active duty Soldier. “Throughout this training, I am building major confidence in myself and I have a good group around me that is helping me in this unit. I am excited to learn and with this unit I will never stop learning”.
