KILLEEN, Texas – “Let’s go, keep your eye on the ball, you can do it,” is heard from the sideline as the coach shouts at the pitcher. “When I tell you to run to home base, you take off as fast as you can.”

Staff Sgt. Phillip D. Moore, a Columbus, Ohio, native and a platoon sergeant for 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, dedicates his personal time to teaching softball.

Moore’s day usually starts off at 5 a.m. to get ready for physical training, starts work at 9 a.m. to train, and takes care of his Soldiers, as well as perform maintenance on equipment.

“When I get off work, roughly around 5 p.m., I usually hold practice three days a week; Monday, Thursday and Sunday, which is optional,” said Moore.

“I’ve assisted my daughter’s coaches over the last two years because of the demand at work,” said Moore. “I wasn’t able to be a full-time coach. With retirement right around the corner, I decided to volunteer to be the head coach.”

Moore said practices are broken down into different areas; one day they focus on infield/outfield throwing, hitting drills, and other fundamentals for about an hour.

Moore teaches softball in the local area for the ages 12 and under group.

“I like to teach the girls about coming together as a team,” said Moore. “Every year, you very seldom get the same child on the team for the upcoming season.”

Learning to work with a new group can pose challenges. Moore works with his girls and strives to instill team building, leadership fundamentals and sportsmanship within the group to be successful.

“My daughter plays catcher for the team,” said Melissa Armendariz, an Odessa, Texas, native. “I’m really impressed with the organization he does and how well he coordinates everything. He uses the military foundation to instill discipline, leadership, confidence and, overall, I think he’s a great role model for the girls.”

Just like the Army, Moore focuses on each individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

“On one child, I may throw the ball as hard as I can and I know she will catch it, and on the other I have to throw it a little softer,” said Moore. “As time goes on, they all build their strength and get better.”

Some of the challenges Moore faces are when a few of the girls only join because their parents make them.

“At first, it’s hard to teach softball to the ones that don’t like initially,” said Moore. “Once I cross that barrier and teach the girls to learn to play softball and get excited about the game, there are a lot of positive results and improvements on their attitude about it.

Moore’s assistant coach, Becky Luvene, a Temple, Texas, native helps him coach the girls. She said she enjoys working with Moore.

“He has a passion for coaching softball,” said Luvene. “I have a lot of fun working with him. We work well as a team and we are able to bounce ideas off one another when coaching the girls.”

Moore said he enjoys seeing the results of his hard work.

“When the girls take the tools that are provided during practice and apply it to an actual game, that makes me happy,” said Moore.

He said his daughter hopes to play softball in college.

“She’s real passionate about softball, which is her number one choice, and she also plays volleyball,” said Moore. “I’m hoping that my daughter and the girls continue to keep their passion and get scholarships for college so they can continue their passion.”
