BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - Team Buckley members and the Bonfils Blood Bank, a local Denver blood center, came together to put on a blood drive to benefit local hospitals on June 2, at the Health and Wellness Center on base.
“We try to make donating blood convenient for people all over Colorado so we like to reach as many different organizations and locations as we can,” said Liz Lambert, Bonfils Blood Bank integrated communication specialist.
During this drive, there were 29 donations from Team Buckley members, 12 of which were new donors.
Staff Sgt. Isaac R. Salazar, 460th Space Wing plans manager, said that he donated because it makes him feel good. Despite having a busy day, he wanted to take the time to do the right thing, he said.
According to their website, Bonfils typically sees a drop in blood donations around holidays and are currently in a critical shortage. This is why some Team Buckley members decided it was an important decision to donate.
Bonfils is one of eight blood banks in the nation that is contracted with the Department of Defense. Members from Bonfils say they like to partner with the military to show their support.
“It was definitely considered a successful drive,” Lambert said. “And we really appreciate the Air Force base’s continued participation.”
Bonfils Blood Bank aims to continue hosting blood drives and plans to have another later this summer on Sept. 2.
