BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – As Phase One of Tradewinds 2015 moves closer to wrapping up another year, the participants are putting nearly two weeks of drills and preparation to the test.

The events leading to the culminating event have prepared participants from 19 U.S. partner nations to cooperate and assist each other in stressful maritime and ground environments and situations.

Tradewinds is an annual U.S. Southern Command-sponsored exercise conducted to strengthen the Caribbean region partner nations’ capacity to respond to natural disasters, humanitarian crises and counter transnational organized crime.

The ability to train together benefits those involved in case of a Regional Security System deployment. The RSS is a multi-national group of military and police units from nearly 20 Caribbean nations that collaborate to respond to emergencies.

“It is critical that we train together and that we understand each other,” said Inspector Travis Rogers, with the St. Kitts-Nevis police department.

Most of the partner nations speak the same language so knowing the tactics and roles that will be jointly employed will allow for better understanding.

“There is s set standard of operations,” said Darlington. “So we sing from the same hymn sheet, in other words.”

“We do training very regularly together,” said Travis. “That would contribute to us performing on the same level.”

Meeting during Tradewinds allows the nations not only to prepare to help each other, but also to exchange intelligence and lessons learned.

They learn best and worst practices from each other which helps to improve operations at home, said Darlington.
“In a changing world and environment we really are required to ‘step up the plate’,” said Travis. “Training is critical.”

Phase One skills will expand in Phase Two, in Belize from June 15-24. The participants will focus on interoperability, primarily during ground operations. Phase Three is a Key Leader Seminar featuring key regional stakeholders and decision makers July 14-16 in Miami.
