QUANTICO, Va. - More than 20 college coaches from across the United States participated in the Marine Corps Recruiting Command Coach’s Workshop, May 27th through the 30th.

Throughout the week, participants interacted with officer instructors and key leaders and also saw the process of training and commissioning Marine Officers.

“There are so much great things that come from this weekend,” said Anthony Perotti, Assistant Female Basketball Coach with Louisiana State University. “You can see how easy it is for Marines to become entrenched with each other and the love they have for each other because what you go through is tough and the people you go through it with are your family.“

The workshop takes coaches who may have a basic understanding of what the Marine Corps is, and does, and shows them many different aspects of the Marine Corps so they can return to their communities and share their experiences. Additionally, it gives guests an accurate perspective about the Corps, showing them that the Marine Corps is a viable career option for young people with whom they interact daily.

“I don’t think there is a word past respect. On all the levels I was thoroughly impressed with how prepared Marines are, both in the classroom and on the field. The preparation to lead our country is phenomenal,” said Doshia Woods, Assistant Female Basketball Coach with Tulane University. “The level that Marines go to ensure that they’re Americas finest has been very impressive.”

Guests make decisions similar to those a lieutenant would make while attending The Basic School, a six-month long course that introduces Marine Officers to basic combat fundamentals. They then discuss decision making during highly chaotic situations and what it means to be a true leader.

“Every coach that sees this should look to get into it,” said Jocelyn Wyatt, Assistant Female Basketball Coach with Penn State University. “I was hesitant at first, but I am so glad, so grateful and so motivated after going through this.”

The next Coach’s Workshop will take place August 5th through the 8th. College coaches interested in attending should contact Marine Corps Recruiting Command Office of Diversity at MCRCDiversity@marines.usmc.mil.
