    1st Mission Support Command

    FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico - On May 30, 2015, the 1st Mission Support Command (1st MSC) U.S. Army Reserve-Puerto Rico headquarters celebrated the Retirement Ceremony of Brig. Gen. Fernando Fernandez at the command’s headquarters.

    During the ceremony, guest speaker MG (Ret.) Roberto W. Smith, III, talked about how honored he was to be part of the ceremony.

    “He is an American Soldier…. You kept a long line going Fernando, I am blessed to have served with such a wonderful person”, said Smith.

    During the ceremony Fernandez receive numerous awards and tokens of appreciation. One of the recognitions came from President Barack Obama. “I extend to you my personal thanks and the sincere appreciation of a grateful nation for a contribution of honorable service to our country…” “All Americans join me today in saluting you for a job extremely well done, my best wishes to you for happiness and success in the future…”, read part of the massage written and signed by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

    “For us is important to maintain a strong bond with U.S. Army Forces and to have a friendly bond between our countries, and to be part of occasions like this one” said Maj. Maria Constansa Grosso, Reservist officer of the Colombian army, who traveled to Puerto Rico to witness the ceremony.

    Brig. Gen. Ret. Fernando Fernandez thanked every guest who was part of his retirement ceremony.

    “I am truly grateful and excited that all of you decided to accompany me in this special moment in which I culminate my military career. As I close my career as an Army Reserve Officer I can look back and be more than happy for all the friends and good memories that I have accumulated true the past three decades, for all good things should come to an end, my time has passed, my work is done, all I have left is to say good bye.” , said Brig. Gen. Ret. Fernando Fernandez as part of his remarks.

    “What an honor for me to see previous Commanding Generals and Retired Service Members of this Command but they are here today, on a Saturday because we are saying farewell to a great officer who spent his entire career dedicated to this command and our Soldiers…”, said Brig. Gen. Jose R. Burgos, commanding general of the 1st Mission Support Command, U.S. Army Reserve-Puerto Rico, during his speech.

    Fernandez was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corp upon graduating from the University of Puerto Rico Reserve Officers Training Corps Program in 1983.
