YONGIN, South Korea - Stress is like a double-edged sword. At a moderate amount, it can motivate oneself to reach higher. In excess, however, it can diminish morale and work efficiency.

As a way to alleviate stress, more than 30 Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division toured the Korean Folk Village May 22 in Yongin, South Korea.

The village, located approximately an hour and half south of Seoul, is a popular tourist destination that provides visitors with a cultural experience encompassing the traditions, cuisine and methodology used during Korea’s Joseon era, according to their website.

The outing was organized by the brigade chaplain to reduce stress and provide Soldiers with appropriate coping mechanisms and positive outlooks through a suicide awareness class.

“Stress and depression are very big parts of suicide,” said Chaplain (Maj.) Geun Lee. “People have to cope with stress throughout their lives as a part of a society and this includes Soldiers as well,” he said.

“As the chaplain, I wanted Soldiers to able to decompress their stress and help them by going on a trip off-post and away from their daily lives.”

By visiting the village Soldiers gained insight on Korean culture and experienced what the country was like earlier in its history, as opposed to what they see today.

“This was a great trip for Soldiers to relieve stress while staying out with each other to experience Korea,” said Capt. Mark Gordon, commander of HHB, 210th FA Bde. “It was a great trip for them to experience the culture because they were in a folk village, not just Seoul or Busan. They got to see what ancient Korea was like and see the history behind the country.”

“I got to go out and do different activities and watch different shows they have for us,” said Sgt. William Reynolds, an intelligence analyst and native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. “It was a good experience just to be able to get some of the cultural background. It allowed me to interact with more people from different areas and see the traditions of Korea.”
